About Us ~ CommuniTea CIC

We started our journey in September 2012.

CommuniTea is a tea room bringing local communities together while supporting people dealing with wellbeing, general health as well as mental health issues.

It is also a “community hub” providing welfare support to the local community. The objectives are to deliver activities which benefit the community, in particular (without limitation) to families to help them overcome barriers and improve their quality of life.

We have become a one-stop shop for tea drinking and welfare support. We have been trading for over 9 years. As well as promoting the health benefits and nutritional value of tea customers the shop brings together the town’s diverse communities who share their stories over a cuppa. This gives us an opportunity to deliver other services, so far we have delivered health & wellbeing projects addressing local needs/issues; e.g. workshops on Cancer awareness, Living with Diabetes, healthy eating, smoking cessation, dental access and most recently we have put together training to identify expert patients in the community to share experiences and support others.

A wide range of sessions are delivered through our volunteers and partner agencies.  Get in touch and find out about the current events, activities and training oon offer.

Our next stage of development is to expand this programme and find larger premises to accommodate the growing range of services, accessibility and space for the community. We have established working relationships with community organisations including; Rochdale Borough Council, Rochdale Training, GMP, Rochdale Circle, Rochdale & District Mind, Heywood Middleton & Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

We plan to provide more services. As a social enterprise we do not have to rely on wholly funding as are able to use the surplus from our takings through the Tea Room and as we develop our services and capacity we will attract funding from agencies such as the council and health commissioners.

CommuniTea employs local people in various roles from full-time to part-time as well as takes on apprentices, interns and work experience students. All of the staff and volunteers live in the Rochdale Borough. We have created posts that have been filled by local people who were unemployed. We have a pool of volunteers who support our work in various ways from befriending, mentoring, counselling to serving / cooking for our tea room.

We have a a board of directors that oversee the work of CommuniTea. Between them they offer years of experience and community knowledge. The three founder board members include a GP, a former lawyer, currently lead officer for community cohesion with the local authority and an experienced manager of food outlets with local authority experience. The board share mutual interests in the health & well being of local people. As the project develops we will recruit more board members from the local community as well as setting up a user group and membership to enable the local community to influence what we do and to participate in decisions.
